Paper Mill Workers and Asbestos Exposure
Paper mill facilities used asbestos-containing materials for a variety of purposes. Heavy machinery often contained asbestos, especially in high-friction or high-heat devices like pulp rollers or dryer felt equipment.
Dryer Felt Containing High Volume of Asbestos
Dryer felt could contain an extremely high volume of asbestos fibers. A patent field in 1955 details a dryer felt design where the outer layer was primarily asbestos fibers mixed with synthetic materials to add strength. Since this equipment spun at high speeds and required workers to replace it regularly, it exposed many workers to asbestos fibers. Other times, damaged materials, such as piping insulation, could expose workers to asbestos. A 2002 study of French pulp and paper mill workers found that known asbestos exposure affected 36% of the study population.
Paper Mill Workers Asbestos Exposure and Cancer Risk
As a result of increased asbestos exposure, paper mill workers faced a correlating high risk of developing an asbestos-related cancer condition. A study of British Columbian paper mill workers revealed that paper mill workers developed pleural cancers at over two and a half times the normal population rate.
Increased Malignant Mesothelioma in Paper Mill Workers
Another study published in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine found similar results. Paper mill workers faced an increased risk of both malignant mesothelioma and lung cancers. The study concluded that working environments exposed employees to a variety of health risks that may have further increased the risk of conditions like lung cancer.
Swedish Studies Notes Increased Cancers
A Swedish study also noted an increased risk of asbestos-related cancers among paper mill workers. Those that worked in sulfate mills faced the highest risk. They developed pleural mesothelioma at more than one and a half times the rate of the normal population.
