ADAO and EWG Reports: Asbestos imports rise as Trump’s White House takes over in order to legalize A Deadly Carcinogen | New Government Reports: Asbestos imports rose 2000% in July-August.
In the wake of President Donald Trump’s business-friendly Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) attempting to ease restrictions on asbestos’ commercial use, which has been linked to cancer and lung disease, a review of federal data released Tuesday showed that asbestos imports to the United States increased by nearly 2,000 per cent between July and August last year.
In August alone, 272 metric tons of asbestos was imported into the United States, up from 13 metric tons in July, according to data from the U.S. International Trade Commission and the Department of Commerce.
The startling rise is a good sign that the industry does not fear that President Trump and the EPA will eventually try to regulate, or at least downgrade, the use and import of asbestos/asbestos.
The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), a nonprofit organisation that works to protect people from asbestos exposure through education, advocacy and grassroots advocacy in the United States, announced new findings obtained in a study by Dr. Jukka Takala, President of the International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH).
According to findings presented at the 14th Annual Asbestos Disease Awareness Conference in Washington DC, deaths from asbestos are skyrocketing, and there is a need for a complete ban on asbestos.
Asbestos causes 39,275 US deaths per year, over twice as many as were previously thought to happen.Dr Takala’s research also showed that the disease killed more than half as many Americans as previously estimated. In particular, asbestos accounts for 34,270 lung cancer deaths, 3,161 mesothelioma deaths, 787 ovarian cancer deaths, 443 laryngeal cancer deaths and 613 chronic asbestosis deaths.
According to the study, “asbestos is a deadly carcinogen, and we are seeing its effect everywhere.” The United States must step up and accept that we have a ban. There’s no safe exposure.
Despite WHO’s call, Fast Company claims Trump’s administration ‘let firms make it much easier for companies to launch new asbestos products in the US.
While Asbestos Nation estimates that 55 nations have outlawed carcinogens, it’s easy to ask: Does my state outlaw asbestos?
