Recently the U.S. Attorney’s office has filed criminal charges against the owner of The Overlook at Mile High Stadium apartment complex located at 3190 W. 14th Ave in Denver.
It is alleged the owner caused asbestos to become airborne near Sports Authority Field field from January of 2014 to February putting the general public at imminent risk of asbestos exposure and its deadly consequences.
At the time of the asbestos exposure, there were two playoff games played by the Denver Broncos where tens of thousands of people gathered to watch the games.
The apartment complex is located about half a mile from the playing field. During the time asbestos was being released from two towers of the apartment complex into the air during renovation projects in 2014.
The owner of the apartment complex, John Tom Williams, could face a year in prison and hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines for knowingly causing deadly asbestos exposure and not doing anything to stop the exposure from happening.
The owner has agreed to pay the costs of medical monitoring for its tenants and employees of the apartment complex. The owner also agreed to plead guilty to misdemeanor charges and has spent millions to repair the asbestos exposure problems.
Asbestos exposure has been found to result in deadly illnesses such as mesothelioma or lung cancer many years after asbestos exposure. The friable asbestos fibers are inhaled into the lungs and lie dormant for decades causing cells to mutate over time and later become horrific illnesses like mesothelioma.
So far there have not yet been any reports of illnesses stemming from this asbestos exposure incident.
