A medical study has shown that prophylactic radiation therapy tends to have zero beneficial effect on the patients diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma. In view of such a situation, the medical practitioners and researchers have suggested not to use this radiation therapy on the patients.
In most of the cases, it is very difficult for patients diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma, to cope with the news and the situation. Such patients are likely to face situations of grim prognosis in which they are required to take certain essential decisions but within a short span of time. Such patients need to decide where they want to get their treatment and exactly how aggressively do they want to treat their illness.
However to ease the situation of such patients a recent medical study has rubbed off the need for one medical decision. This study has come to the forefront as it was found that the prophylactic radiation therapy that has frequently been suggested to the patients before the invasive procedures tend to have almost zero protective benefits to the patients. It also tends to have a risk of many harmful side effects that increase the disease rather than treating it effectively.
This medical study on the prophylactic radiation therapy was published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. The medical study was initiated to examine the use and effect of prophylactic radiation therapy on patients diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma.
A recent study on the impact of prophylactic radiation therapy was conducted by examining 375 patients who had been diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma. The group of patients was stratified into the ones who did not receive the prophylactic radiation therapy and those who did. The findings of the study stated that there was no difference between these two groups in terms of the incidence of the chest wall.
As the prophylactic radiation therapy is having no effect on the patients, the experts and researchers in the medical field are recommending not to use this procedure thus saving the patients from certain discomforts.
