Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common type of lung cancer, comprising around 80 to 85 percent of diagnoses.

These type of cancers are common among patients who have a history of smoking cigarettes, which can increase the risk of lung cancer even further among those exposed to asbestos.

Treatment

Treatment options for non-small cell lung cancer vary based on the extent of the tissue’s spread, its location and the health of the patient. For early stage cancer, resection and removal of tumors before metastization along with chemotherapy or radiation can help achieve a positive prognosis.

Patients suffering from NSCLC generally have a higher five-year survival rate than those who have developed a small cell lung cancer condition.

Adenocarcinoma

Adenocarcinoma is a very common NSCLC condition, seen in around 40 percent of the lung cancer patient population. The risk of developing adenocarcinoma is extremely high among those with a history of smoking cigarettes. At the same
time, adenocarcinoma is the most commonly seen variety of cancer diagnosis among those who do not smoke cigarettes.

The growth of adenocarcinoma tissue usually begins in the outer parts of the lungs within cells that produce and secrete mucus.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinomas are cancerous conditions marked by the growth of flat cancer cells. Around 25 percent to 30 percent of lung cancer cases are squamous cell varieties.

The growth of this type of cancer tissue usually begins along squamous cells that line the bronchial tubes and air pathways of the lungs.

Large Cell Carcinoma

Large cell carcinoma is a condition similar to small cell lung cancer varieties save for the large size of the cells. It can grow quickly and rapidly metastasize, especially to the lymph nodes and chest pleural cavity. Treatment is difficult given the aggressive nature of these cancer tissues.
